New year resolutions

Getting fit—is that one of your new year resolutions?

Well our tips will help you keep your feet in top shape, so you're free to exercise pain free.

  1. Start slowly. Start any new workouts gradually. You want this to be for the long term, so slowly increase the intensity and length of your workouts. Easing yourself into the new exercise will help you avoid overuse injuries such as stress fractures or tendon strains and sprains.
  2. Stretching. Stretching your muscles before and after workouts also helps to prevent injuries.
  3. Seek help early. Listen to your body and if you're concerned about an injury, get it treated as soon as possible. For example, if you regularly sprain your ankle, you could end up with chronic pain and unstable ankles.
  4. Get fitted for the right shoes and socks. Wear well-fitting athletic shoes that support the arch of your foot, provide a cushion for your heel and have enough room for your toes. Wear cotton or non-slip socks to help guard against chafing and blisters.
  5. Learn the right techniques. It makes sense that you take the time to learn the basics—so you don't injure yourself lifting those weights or squatting those squats!
  6. Guard against fungus. Sweaty shoes, public showers and the pool surrounds at your local gym are breeding grounds for fungus. To protect yourself from fungus, wear shoes in public areas, and check your feet regularly for signs of fungal infections. Keep your feet dry by changing your socks frequently and using a clean towel to dry between your toes after a shower.
